WHNA Annual Picnic

WHNA’s picnic got rained out in May, so now we are ready to have some fun at the re-scheduled picnic on September 20. Let’s block off a street and have a party!

You’re invited to attend the annual Westover Hills Neighborhood Picnic on Saturday, September 20, from 4:30 p.m. to dark. The picnic will be on the 1900 block of Prince Arthur Road, between Evelyn Byrd and New Kent. This is a great event for everyone to meet their neighbors. We will have fun activities for the kids like face painting, balloon twisting, bubble wands, and kid games. Kids and adults will enjoy the music of a live band and the best of O’Toole’s picnic food. Soft drinks, wine, and keg beer will be provided along with grilled burgers, hot dogs, barbequed beans, desserts, and all the fixings.

Children 5 and under attend free. Adults pay $15 per person, $25 for 2 people, or $30 for a family of three or more. If you haven’t renewed your WHNA membership dues for this year, do so at picnic entrance and get $5 off. Those brand new to the neighborhood get in free when paying their annual membership dues at the picnic ($15 per household).

The weather will probably be wonderful, but if the picnic must be cancelled due to rain we will try again on Sunday, September 21.

43rd Street Festival

The 43rd Street Festival of the Arts will be held on Saturday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is one of Richmond’s premier art events — right in our neighborhood! It features about 75 fine artisans selling their wares, from pottery to painting, from jewelry to turned wood.

Local musicians will provide great entertainment all day. The line-up this year includes OminOtagO at 10 a.m., Rachel Leyco at 11:30 a.m., Janet Martin at 1 p.m., Bluz Catz at 2:30 p.m., and Blue Line Highway at 4 p.m. Food will be available from various vendors, and kid activities such as street art and face painting will make it fun for the whole family.

The festival is also a fund raiser for CARITAS, which provides services to homeless people in the Richmond area.

E-cycle day

The city will hold its next e-cycle and document shredding day on Saturday, September 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of North Boulevard and Robin Hood Road. Here’s an efficient and green way to recycle unwanted electronics.

The city accepts electronics such as computers, monitors, radios, vacuum cleaners, and microwaves. There’s a $7 recycling fee for TVs. All other items are recycled free of charge. The city can’t accept fluorescent light bulbs and large appliances.

Gone 4 Good Shred will be on-site for document shredding. Residents can dispose of up to five boxes of unwanted paper.
